2020 Hindsight

I came in unassumingly enough as you played
Another promising decade of what to be made?
I gave early warning with ravaging bush fires
Just a coincidence to all the deniers
Those nobly sober in January suddenly a missed opportunity
To revel with others and do so with impunity
I should have let some of you have respite in July
Those that would love you to believe it’s a phase passing by
That some ignore and misinterpret that Black Lives matter
Think they’re showing their smarts with ‘all lives matter’ patter
I blew out a large but not so mighty Trump
(though he’s yet to admit he’s for the jump)
Given people who like Icke have the almighty hump
Some took joy in leaving historic allies
The grass being greener on the other side lies
I kept you from the ones you love and adore
And yet somehow you managed to endure
The many you loved their host gone
The beacon on those trying to save lives shone
I’ve highlighted the lives of others and the unjust disparity
But also offered up needed life affirming stories of humanity
Now I’ve left you and let in 2021
And despite my best efforts, somehow, you’re not all undone
It’s the hope that kills you and yet it’s the hope keeps you going on
